How to know your PAN? : PAN or permanent account number holds importance for both Indian as well as foreign citizens as they are used for the majority of financial transactions.PAN aren’t a proof of citizenship of any individual and it is not affected by any change of address. The permanent account number is unique to every individual and has permanent validity throughout India. It is not possible for anyone to make any important business transactions if they don’t have a PAN as PAN also serves as a means of prevention of tax invasion and other transaction related frauds. But in case anyone gets in a situation where they have registered PAN and have a PAN card but they didn’t take their PAN card for any such transactions, here are steps to guide you to quickly and easily recover your permanent account number or PAN.
The process of knowing your PAN can be done by using the Pan Card status page. A person can acquire the permanent account number using two different methods/websites/sources. The first procedure to do this is by using the NSDL (national securities depository limited) website. The other can be done by visiting the website of UTI (Unit Trust of India). You need to choose which website to recover your Pan details from. This needs to be in accordance with the agency/organization you opted for while registering for the PAN card.
NSDL Website for PAN Recovery–
This page is to track your PAN application status page with following fields-
- Application type –In this field appears a drop down list of PAN or TAN Application type. This is a mandatory field and hence cannot be missed.
- Acknowledgment number – There’s an option to either fill this field or the 2 mentioned below. In case you don’t remember your acknowledgment number, you can proceed by clicking on the name and date option.
- Name – This consists of three fields. The first field is for last name/surname. The second one is for the first name and the third field is meant for the middle name. Instructions for writing the name as on application form is mentioned at the bottom. So as to guide you throughout. You won’t feel any issue while filling up the form.
- Date of Birth / Incorporation / Agreement / Partnership of Trust Deed / Formation of body of Individuals / Association of Persons – In this field fill the date of birth by choosing from the drop-down list.
Once all the detail is filled, recheck it to ensure that it is correct. After filling up the page with correct information in the mandatory fields you can click on submit and this will load your pan application status page with all the details including your acknowledgment number, name, category, status and your permanent account number.
You can use the above process in case you applied for your PAN through NDLS. Otherwise, in case you have applied through UTI for your pan card, follow the below-mentioned steps to know the permanent account number through the UTI website.
UTI website for PAN Recovery-
The page of UTI consists of two fields. Application coupon number or pan number. Fill up the application coupon number correctly and then click submit button on the screen.
Although The UTI website appears similar to NDLS but comparatively gets much more simplified when it comes to using it. It would require you to enter the application coupon number only to give out the PAN card details.
These methods can be used in case anyone loses or forgets their PAN and needs to get it quickly in order to do their financial transactions such as opening a bank account, receiving a salary, etc. Other than the above-mentioned methods there are also other methods of knowing your permanent account number.
Certain other methods to know the permanent account number
Another method of knowing your PAN is by using e-filling website. This is a simple method and require details like first name, middle name (if exists) and surname as well as father’s name, middle name (if exists) surname and date of birth (DOB). These simple and easy to remember details are all that are needed in case permanent account number or pan is lost or forgotten.
In order to use the e-filling website, you need to have an account and log in to get your PAN details. In case you don’t have an account then instead you can use your friends or family member’s account. Once you log in you need to select ‘know your pan’ option from the drop down list. Here the form will open and you need to fill the field with necessary details without any errors. Once you verify that you are not a robot by filling up the captcha code, you can proceed to get to the next step.

Whenever filling up details for your pan card you need to keep certain things in mind and thereby fill up the form correctly in order to get the details you’re looking for.
Typing errors can unknowingly create a big problem… Any typing errors can cause errors in getting your details. Formats are another main thing to keep note of while filling up these forms. When entering the name, it needs to be filled with a surname at the start followed by first name and middle name. Any change in the order will not give out the exact and correct result. Similarly, the date needs to be in dd/mm/yy format.
You need to fill up the details and submit them quickly because in case you take time in filling up the details, the session expires and you’ll need to fill up the whole form again.
